Slay Layered Jewellery

Slay Layered Jewellery

To slay layered jewellery like a pro and get a balanced and sophisticated look, you need to know the basics of layering. Here are the 6 key tips for how to layer your jewellery for maximum (subtle) impact.

1. THINK ABOUT TEXTURE

Particularly when it comes to necklaces, it's a good idea to mix things up a bit in terms of weight and density. Try alternating between heavier, statement-making chains and slimmer, delicate ones as you go and you'll find a natural balance.

2. CREATE A FOCUS

Rather than simply layering 2/3 simple chains atop one another, why not introduce one with a pendant, an amulet or a carrier? It'll create a more curated look with the base chains acting as supportive backing dancers to the main event.

3. VARY YOUR LENGTHS

Perhaps the most obvious tip but undoubtedly the most commonly forgotten, wearing several necklaces of the same length does nothing but create a chunky metal mass with the inevitable threat of repetitive tangles. Instead, stagger your lengths to create flow and nonchalant subtlety.

4. DON'T BE AFRAID OF MIXING METALS

Mixing metals is the new chic. Where once it was a sin, it can now look elegant and shows flair. I recommend using the same style of chain if you use different metals as visually it can look overwhelming. If you want to mix the chain styles then consider keeping the colours the same ie all gold, all silver. This just keeps things simpler and more elegant.

We made a styling tutorial on mixing metals here.

5. HAVE A SENSE OF SYNERGY

Whether layering your necklaces, earrings, or rings it's wise to have some semblance of a theme running throughout. Something as subtle as the same gemstone colour, to tie the look together and justify your selection keeps the look feeling more curated and less thrown together.

6. BE WARY OF OVERKILL

If you have a tendency to be a bit OTT with your jewellery, there's a very simple way to avoid overkill, the Coco Chanel tip: When you think your look is complete, remove the last thing you put on. It'll keep the original, curated layers as well as the intended sense of ease and simplicity.

If you want to layer it's important to know when to stop as things can get tangled and uncomfortable! Add an amulet to change the shape and create a dramatic V or our carabiner clasps for visual interest. It draws the eye to these areas of interest and inevitably provides the wow factor.
